She won't suppress her curves to fit the brief...

This is Crystal Renn. Isn't she beautiful. She is a plus-size model. I came across her in another blog and being a curvy girl myself I felt I should do a post on her. She starved herself to be a model but she copped on and realised that her natural body size was not thin. Now she is a beautiful size 14 and looks stunning and is doing very well for herself I believe.

Now I'm not one of those girls who gets all huffy and mad because there are too many skinny models in magazines and such... They don't bother me in the slightest. What bothers me is that there are loads of interesting and stylish collections or shops (nastygal/urban outfitters/rvca/ forever 21) out there that don't cater to the bigger woman. I look at so many blogs and editorials and I might spot something and go "oooh yummy, I want" at some article of clothing. I'll then wander on to the online shop to see what the price and sizing is like and it will just be an inch or two (or three) too small for me. Tis a tad frustrating...

Now don't get me wrong I've loads of clothes and I wouldn't call myself fat (size 16: bust 42, waist 32, hips 41/2ish). I just can't understand why some shops can't add an extra two inches or so onto their clothes (for me, please!). Trust me, I'm sure they will be bought.

I do apologise for complaining so much in this post. I am very lucky that I have my curves and still fit into a hell of a lot of clothes. I've no real need to moan like I am but I'm gonna anyway...

UPDATE: I got a message off Wildfox saying that their sizes are bigger than I had expected and that they should fit my size (so other people my size too, yay!) because they go for that oversized look. I asked them for measurements because it isn't on the online shop, hopefully I'll get them soon (XS,S,M,L are always difficult to decipher). Sorry Wildfox for dragging your name in the fashion mud!

She is amazing, Rhona. What a find. I've been stalking lots of beautiful "plus sizers" online. Curves = amazing.

I know what you mean about complaining and shopping. I'm the same. I complain, but I don't mean to do it so often. I've nothing against smaller girls, I think they're beautiful in their own way, I just want to see a little bit of everything in the mainstream media. There's room for us curvy girls too!

  4. I hate when anonymous people leave negative comments, although pretty sure that one is taking the piss. She must be!
Interesting post Rhona. You do such amazing outfit posts that I am always envious of. I really don't think size matters at all, if you're stylish, you're stylish!

  5. Oh shes stunning...! There's an ad on Dublin buses at the moment for a holiday company or something and it has this girl in a bikini on it, but its so refreshing cause she looks curvy and so natural...! Yeah I get what you mean, like shops should cater for all sizes as so much of the stuff they sell is so flattering for curves. Most plus size shops start at size fourteen and sixteen which is ridiculous seeing as thats roundabouts the average womans dress size! I was in Bershka yesterday and I saw a pair of shorts with this lovely faded rose print on them but they only stocked sizes 4 and 6 in them! Which is ridiculous seeing as barely anyone I know fits into that... tut tut its all very frustrating! But of course YOU Rhona look gorgeous in all the clothes you wear :)

    Love love love,

    Erin

  6. Ah, sizing on RVCA is ridiculous. It's conforming to such a narrow fraction of females I'm surprised they even turn a profit.
That said it is beautiful so maybe I'm not that surprised!

  7. Our unisex T, size 2, should fit you great! Our stuff is all bigger than normal brands, for that "oversized" look

Anonymous sucks if they're being serious!

Although, my personal feeling is that in fashion photography, small waif-looking girls (not stick thin) do work better because they tend to melt into the photo, rather than stand out and so you focus on the outfit and the style of the shoot instead of the girl! That's from a photographic design perspective though!
When it comes to catwalks though, I think curvier girls look way better!
And argh, shops need to sort themselves out...like I'm a size 10 and there have been times in topshop and UO that I won't fit into their biggest size (L)...it's INSANE!
